Tala Filipino Club
Staff Contact – Victoria Mitchell (victoria.mitchell@hvhs.school.nz)

The Tala Filipino Club is a student-led forum for Filipino students (migrant and New Zealand-born) to celebrate and share their culture and journey together. As scattered stars across the sky to guide travellers in the dark, ‘Tala’ represents bright, beautiful stars helping people navigate different experiences and stories, especially when they feel unfamiliar or challenging. We will build cultural pride and identity through enjoying special cultural days (Filipino Independence Day / Language Week), contributing to our school and local multicultural events with stalls and performances, sharing Filipino language, food, music, and traditions, and creating connections with other Filipinos and Kiwis to play, learn, and study together. We will enjoy DIY Filipino food workshops, music appreciation (Original Pilipino Music (OPM) songs), watching clips of Filipino culture films (school-approved), art workshops, reviving childhood and traditional Filipino games and tournaments.
Future plans for the club include: mixed sports and culture day of mini-friendly games with basketball and volleyball rotations and ‘Larong Pinoy’ Sports day of Filipino Traditional games e.g. Tumbang Preso, Luksong Baka, Patintero (Line Tag Game), and Agawan Base (Capture the Flag Filipino style).
The club meets every second Wednesday at lunchtime, usually in the pavilion. Any changes will be shared to the membership through a Google Classroom created specially for Tala Filipino.
