Year 9 and Year 10
Extension Reading Group (Self-selected) meets weekly on Friday lunchtimes in P1.
Year 11
Extension Reading Group (pre-Scholarship) Top 32 English students invited and a few self selected. Meets weekly on Friday lunchtimes in G1.
In Term 3, the same top students plus selected others will be offered the opportunity to prepare for and sit 2.3. Workshops will take place on Tuesday mornings at 8am. Students then sit the L2 Exam as well as the Level 1 exam in the school exams as well as the NZQA exams. We always have excellent results with this scheme.
Year 12
Scholarship is offered to anyone who wants to attend. We shoulder tap the most able. This takes place Fridays 8am in D1. Breakfast is offered. This programme starts early in Term One and carries on all year. We have had great success with Year 12s sitting Scholarship English and roughly half of our Scholarships every year are achieved by this year group.
In Term 3, many of the Scholarship students plus selected others will be offered the opportunity to prepare for and sit 3.3. Workshops will take place on Tues mornings at 8am. Students then sit the L3 Exam as well as the Level 2 exam in the school exams as well as the NZQA exams. We always have excellent results with this scheme.
Year 13
Scholarship is offered to anyone who wants to attend. We shoulder tap the most able. This takes place Fridays 8am in D1. Breakfast is offered. This programme starts early in Term One and carries on all year.
Other
There are numerous speech, creative writing and formal writing competitions that take place during the year. We offer these to appropriate levels. At times, we have visiting authors who talk about their book(s) and offer creative writing sessions. We select groups of students, or perhaps classes who may benefit from these opportunities.
