Gateway & Employment Ready Programmes
Gateway Programme
The Gateway and Employment Ready programmes are designed to prepare students for their future workplace.
Gateway is structured workplace learning for students. In 2023, our Gateway students undertook a work placement, usually 10 days completed over the school year and gained hands-on work experience in their chosen pathway strengthening relationships with their employers.
In the Gateway programme students are able to complete courses including First Aid, Workplace Safety and Site Safe and based on their individual needs and career goals.
As a result of this programme, students gained a range of apprenticeships, secured jobs or are heading to Polytech for further specialist training.
Central to the Gateway programme are community projects that benefit local schools, aged care facilities and community organisations. A key student mantra for these projects is ‘staying resilient and solving problems when they confront us‘. Community projects are designed to provide challenges and opportunities for student groups to brainstorm, formulate and carry out beneficial activities within the local community. In 2023, twenty two community projects were completed including designing, testing, building and delivering new indoor play equipment for Lower Hutt Kindergarten.
Applications for the 2025 Gateway programme open in Term 3 of 2024 – keep an eye out for information on Google Classroom and in the newsletter. Students are required to apply as this course is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission who pay for courses, equipment and even the student graduation ceremony at the end of term 3.
Employment Ready Programme
Employment Ready involves classes focused on developing work ready skills. Student learning is largely completed is in small teams to help build workplace communication and cooperation skills that employers value.
Like Gateway, students are able to complete courses including First Aid, Workplace Safety and Site Safe and based on their individual needs and career goals specific courses e.g. barista and retail training and the Warehouse’s Red Shirts in Schools programme. The Employment Ready programme also involves organising workplace experiences for students, especially for those in Year 13.
