The Social Sciences Learning Area is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. Contexts are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond New Zealand.

Subjects Offered in 2025
The Learning Area of Social Sciences includes the following subjects in 2025:
- Social Studies in Years 9 & 10
- Accounting & Personal Finance in Year 11 and Accounting in Years 12 & 13
- Business Studies in Years 11, 12 & 13
- Classical Studies in Years 11, 12 & 13
- Economics, International Trade & Finance in Year 11 and Economics in Years 12 & 13
- Geography in Years 11, 12 & 13
- History in Years 11, 12 & 13
- Tourism in Years 12 & 13
Social Studies is compulsory up to Year 10. From Year 11, students can select from Accounting, Business Studies, Classical Studies, Economics, Geography and History. Students can also select to study Tourism from Year 12.
