Vacancy – Attendance Officer

We are looking for a dynamic, fun, and organised individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment. If your strengths include a high level of attention to detail and the ability to switch between tasks with ease, then we want to hear from you!

We are a large school in Lower Hutt within a diverse community where approximately 1,980 students and 170 staff are on-site each day. The Attendance Officer role is a crucial one, as the school is responsible for students for the duration of the school day, and we must adhere to Ministry of Education attendance requirements.

In this role, you’ll be expected to manage competing priorities, stay focused on the details, and meet deadlines. The skills required for this role include:

  • Multi-tasking: The ability to juggle different duties is essential. You’ll likely need to handle a variety of tasks during the school day.
  • Teamwork: You’ll be working alongside others in the administration office, answering phones, assisting with reception, and other administrative tasks. There is high interaction with students, whānau, and all staff.
  • Repetitive tasks with deadlines: Some aspects of the role may involve repetitive work, but the upside is there’s a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
  • School environment: The role directly contributes to supporting students and staff, with a focus on the school’s values and community.

Hours of work: the Attendance Officer role is a term-time position, working Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm 6.5 hours per day, 32.5 hours per week) for 40 weeks per year. Some additional hours may be required during school term breaks, by prior agreement. The start date for the role is Monday, 28 April 2025 (the start of Term 2).

Vacancy – NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) Educational Interpreter

Hutt Valley High School is seeking an NZSL Educational Interpreter to work in our Learning Support Department.  This is a fixed-term, part-time position working 10-14 hours from Monday to Wednesday during term time only. This role provides support for a student for 2025.

The Educational Interpreter’s (EI) role is to provide access to the curriculum and facilitate communication among students who are deaf and their hearing peers and teachers. They will serve as a facilitator of communication according to the student’s language level and the goals of their Individual Education Plan (IEP) plan.

Their knowledge of the language level of the curriculum and that of the student enables them to bridge communication between the two languages (English and NZSL) in complex and busy classroom environments. This role differs from that of a Community Interpreter as EI’s may be required to further ‘unpack’ new concepts and adapt the type of support they provide to meet the individual learning needs of the student.

Requirements:

  • BA degree with a major in NZSL – English Interpreting or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in NZSL and a good understanding of deaf culture.
  • Preferable experience in educational settings, with a demonstrated ability to interpret in both instructional and social contexts.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to educational equity and inclusivity.

To apply for this role please submit your completed Cover Letter, CV and HVHS Application Form
