Tautoko (Supported Learning Centre)

Tautoko, our Supported Learning Centre, is for both ORS funded and other students with a range of learning needs who require a smaller, specialized environment. Students benefit from having support from Learning Support Assistants and working in small groups, to engage in a full curriculum programme, adapted to meet their individual needs.

Our students participate in the wider life of the school, participating in school events such as School Athletics and ‘Meet and Compete’. Every Year 9 mentor class spends a spell with our students working on a challenge task. Where appropriate, students also have the opportunity to join wider school option classes, according to their aptitudes and interests.

We have a sensory room and a play-based learning Ngaruru space. Our focus is on developing life skills and encouraging independence, with opportunities to participate in the wider community, including inter-school sports events and optional sailing lessons with Sailability.  We have an annual sports exchange with Wairarapa College and our end of year concert provides students with an opportunity to perform in front of family and friends.

Once they reach Year 11, if appropriate, students have the opportunity to achieve Level 1 Supported Unit Standards towards the NZQA Certificate in Skills for Living.  Our Sustainable Networks and Pathways (SNAP) programme prepares senior students for transition from school.  Students work on individualised vocational preparation programmes with the support of student and staff mentors, including work experience in the community, barista training and other activities such as charity appeal collections.
